Fort Pokaran: A 14th century citadel on the ancient trading route to Persia in Western Rajasthan.

Fort Pokaran is a red sandstone fort standing proud amidst the great Thar desert about an hour east of Jaisalmer. The old fashioned rooms and brilliant views, will keep you stuck in time. Come here to discover the mysteries of the desert.

Highlights: This is the real thing. It really gives you the authentic feel of a living fort - not everything is swish hotel-like, so you feel like you are in someone's (very large) home. And you'll be eating local Rajput cuisine - just to complete the experience. Some of Western Rajasthan's mysteries are close at hand - the unexplored cenotaphs at Sarthalmer and the unique man-bird relationship at Kheechan.

Who should go: Couples, families and small groups enroute from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. It's the perfect stopover and a way to see a quiet rural part of Western Rajasthan. Excellent for people with an interest in weaving or pottery. Families travelling with children would love the visit to see Kheechan with its cranes.
