Fish Tail Lodge
Fantastically located, secluded on an island at the end of Fewa Lake, this deluxe hotel offers magnificent views down the lake and up to the Annapurna mountain range. Built in the late 1960s, the style of the low-level round buildings that accommodate 12 standard rooms are unobtrusive and attractive. There are 48 well-equipped modern and comfortable 'standard' rooms, with individual patios in front that look out over the lake, garden, pool or forested shore on the other side of the island. The 12 deluxe rooms are in a two storey building set back a bit from the other buildings. These are not much different from standard rooms, only slightly bigger with a bathtub in the attached bathroom and wall-to-wall carpets.
The atmosphere is exclusive, but in a cosmopolitan and relaxed way. When I was there, Chinese delegates were rubbing shoulders with trekkers pampering themselves after their trek, there was an Indian honeymoon couple from Bombay, an American embassy worker from Kathmandu and an Australian aid worker from Tibet. Previously owned by the royal family, a long list of statesmen from around the world have stayed here. The Fish Tail Lodge is now managed by the Hotel Annapurna in Kathmandu.
The Fish Tail Lodge is not the most 'green' in that there is no especial environmental policy, but it scores very highly on social responsibility. In memory of the former owner of the hotel, Princess Jayanti who was tragically killed during the Royal Massacre in 2001, a trust was formed and profits from here go to assisting the Shahid Gangala Heart Hospital in Kathmandu. This helps poor children afford treatment at this leading edge cardiac hospital.
There is a doctor available on call, currency exchange and travel office. Safe boxes are available at reception.
