If you have wanderlust in your heart and an itch to explore the world, then nothing can stop you from delighting in the experiences of discovering new places or remote landscapes – not even being wheelchair-bound. That, at least, is what the travel-happy folks at PAGIR (People’s Action Group for Inclusion and Rights) have proved. PAGIR is a group of people with disabilities and their kin, who have helped make tourism a truly accessible experience. PAGIR, together with Travel Another India, has developed an inclusive travel circuit in Ladakh. Himalaya on Wheels is an initiative set up by PAGIR and Travel Another India that invites you to explore the spectacular mountain region of Ladakh in your wheelchairs, in the company of your family and friends.
You are taken on a trip of discovery of this stunning region, accompanied by a specially trained helper and driver. As you journey through Mother Nature’s perfect rendition of paradise on earth, watch the Indus or Sindhu wind its aquamarine path through the majestic mountains, the breathtaking sight of the pristine landscape and the Himalayas laid out before you. Your trip here includes visits to the monasteries, shopping for typical Ladakhi souvenirs and watching a cultural programme. An overnight stay at the Uley Tokpo camp is also on the cards. If you choose to stay on for an additional day, you can hold your breath at the exquisite Pangong Lake on the Tibetan border. Of course, no visit to Ladakh is complete without a taste of momos, the famous noodle soup, thukpa or the butter tea that is unique to Ladakh.
Accommodation has been well taken care of, with stays in the 4-star Grand Hotel or the Zik Zik Guesthouse for the budget-conscious. All points of accommodation, including the Uley Tokpo Camp are accessible to guests using wheelchairs and you can be assured of a comfortable stay.
Himalaya on Wheels aims to prove that people with disabilities also can enjoy their holidays as well as be entrepreneurs setting up such ventures.
The cheerful disposition of the Ladakhis and the magic of their universal greeting, Julley, will keep up your spirit throughout your visit and in your memories.
