Alipura Palace
Recommended & pending a personal visit by our travel writer
Bundelkhand is one of the most important places as far as historic India is concerned. Mughals, Marathas and then the British, contributed to its development right from the early 17th century. Some of India’s architectural marvels lay hidden away in this end of the Indo-Gangatic plane.
All places around Alipura are filled with architectural marvels - forts, palaces, temples with fascinating stories of kings fighting wars, cults and its curses and so on. Enter Alipura, and it is a quaint orange village, filled with old-world houses, red hillocks with trees strewn around and this grand palace in the middle, commanding glory even today.
Alipura palace is a 300 year old heritage mansion built by the ancestors of the Rajput king Manvendra Singh, whose family still resides there. One wing of the palace is 150 years old. It is a simple palace with white walls and plain interiors. Once inside you are sure to travel back to British India. Trophies, trinkets, souvenirs, lithographs, Persian rugs and antique furniture create a whole new era for the modern traveller to experience. The royal family being there indicates that there is a lot of scope to hear stories of bravery, love, lust and passion straight from the horses mouth which makes it all the more dramatic.
The rooms are large and simple with soft interiors, white walls and lots of light. There is a multi-cuisine restaurant and a roof top dining experience that is offered. Apart from that, there isn’t really much to do in the hotel, but two-three hours drive from here in various directions lead you to some exquisite spots that will keep you engaged throughout your stay here.
