Serenity Homestay
Mahatma Gandhi once stayed a night at Serenity, and if that conjures up a picture of simplicity and honesty, then you are not wrong! “Serenity” as its name implies is all about calm and tranquillity; basic but clean living spaces, of time reserved for meditation, engaging conversations, and cups of freshly-brewed coffee. The paradox is that this haven of peace is just minutes off the main road of Kodagu (Coorg)’s busy provincial capital, Madikere.
Private time to catch up on reading, long unplanned walks past a picturesque river, or invigorating treks along astonishingly high silver oak trees are the draws of this place. You can choose to be at the main house, particularly if you’ve come with your family—or escape to the privacy of a cosy cottage up in the estate. Or even stay in a minimal-comforts backpacker lodge. Ideal for lone trekkers, couples looking for a good base to explore Kodagu (Coorg), and families who feel a need to bond (without distractions like TV!).
Your host, Ms Monique Somaya, may take you on coffee estate walks peppered with interesting childhood anecdotes. Or send you off on your own for treks, shorter walks and bus-rides to see the sights of Kodagu (Coorg). But your best activity within the estate will be – chatting with your hostess! Her fiery passion for travel, and feisty views on how people are taking the earth for granted, forces you to put on your thinking cap too! Get to know about the many little and big ways through which we can live better; in a more environmentally responsible manner.
