Kings lodge

Recommended & pending a personal visit by our travel writer

Shyamendra Singh, Karan Rana and Yadu are the owners and the soul of this lively lodge. All fierce conservationists in their own way, they have each brought their own special skills and personality to the table. Shyamendra’s love for wildlife brought him to develop hotels in this area. Karan knows the wild country like the back of his hand and is an excellent tracker. He trains villagers and tribals to become naturalists and guides. Yadu is a state level rifle shooter who loves nature and is a great naturalist himself.

Together they have brought King’s Lodge to life. Tribal cottages lay hidden among tall Sal trees in the tail of the Indo-Gangetic plains, in one of India’s most priced possessions – the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. One of the fewplaces int eh world where you can still spot white tigers in the wild. They say the density of the tiger population at Bandhavgarh is the highest known in India but you can also bet on spotting  Sambhar, Barking Deer, wild boar, jackals and a large variety of birds. If luck really favours you, you might even spot the white tiger. Thanks to the Maharajahs who were great hunters, we now face a day where spotting a tiger is merely based on luck. Safaris are what you will be doing mainly. It could be on the specially designed Suzuki jeeps –though the elephant rides will be more fun – and lighter on the planet!

They are well into the journey of responsible tourism. They use alternative energy, organic food, construction is vernacular and environment friendly and they see that they make use of local human and material resources in order to develop the economies of villages nearby.
