Bo Ville Homestay

The Bo Ville Homestay in Shillong has a simple yet effective philosophy – to make all visitors feel as though they’ve stepped into a friend’s place; and even though they’ve begun with only three (large) rooms, it works. This is probably thanks to the informal atmosphere, the friendly owners and the discreet and helpful staff.

The room decor aims for cosy and warm rather than luxurious, and are perfect for older couples wishing for a quiet, peaceful stay. What helps create an atmosphere of being cut off from the world (even though the place is quite centrally located) is the gorgeous garden, which is undoubtedly the highlight of the place. Rows of potted plants and flowers line the exterior walls; the lawn is crisply manicured while overhung with rose bushes and other more exotic fauna. This inevitably means long hours on a cane chair outside, chatting or sipping a cup of hot chai in the cool Shillong weather. When its dark, head indoors, choose a book from the shelf and lounge by a wood fire. The more adventurous can order a cab and head into town to a bar or nightclub. Bo Ville can also arrange trips to tourist spots in and around Shillong.

The home stay practices sustainable and responsible tourism in a number of ways. All visitors are handed a leaflet at the beginning of their stay reminding them to switch off lights, heaters and geysers when they’re not in their rooms. Herbal India sachets of soap (made from 100% vegetable oils) are placed in the bathroom. The linen and towels are made of natural fibre. Best of all, however, is the fact that all their vegetables are organic and home grown in the kitchen garden.

Choose from a wide selection of responsible local accommodations and holiday operators that care deeply about the places that they live in and you would like to visit.
