Orchid Retreat

The Orchid Retreat is a heritage property nestled on a hillside a few kilometres outside of bustling Kalimpong. The retreat lives up to its namesake quite well—solace in a garden filled chock-a-block with orchids and several other botanical fascinations.

Looked after by Ganesh Mani Pradhan and his daughter in law, Honey, - the retreat has evolved since its inception almost a decade ago. What started off as a single cottage in the garden of the Ganesh Villa has evolved into six cottages and four duplex rooms—perfect for groups of travellers on an organised tour, or for individuals seeking solitude in friendly, home-stay surrounds.

In terms of what there is to do in the area, the retreat stays true to its name and the best activity you can do is kick back, sit on the terrace of your cottage and read that book you’ve always wanted to read but never found the time. More intrepid visitors might like to venture into Kalimpong and perhaps visit some of the monasteries, or even inquire about walking in the nearby hills.

Part of the retreat’s experience is to share in the gardening enthusiasm of Mr. Ganesh and his family—one can learn plenty from him over conversations at dinner. Otherwise, food is a major highlight of the visit. What isn’t available from the family’s own garden is usually purchased from the organic growers of nearby villages. Food at the retreat is prepared by hostess Honey and is tailored as much as possible to guests’ tastes.
